#32 - Frebruary Monthly Theme "When people think of my city, they think of Trams"

A tram, tramcar, trolley, trolley car, or streetcar is a railborne vehicle, lighter than a train, designed for the transport of passengers (and/or, very occasionally, freight)on urban streets. Tram systems (or "tramways" or "street railways") were common throughout the industrialized world in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but they disappeared from many cities in the mid-20th century. In recent years, they have made a comeback. Many newer light rail systems share features with trams, although a distinction is usually drawn between the two, especially if the line has significant off-street running.

Yes, this person does! When I saw you hadn't posted yet earlier today, I immediately thought "trams" and hoped you would :-)

That's a nice shot - lots of towns are going back to trams now, but the new ones don't have as much character.

Spot on! I do actually think of trams when I hear Lissabon (as we call it).

And Fernando Pessoa too.
Good means of public transportation, it tooks almost 30 years to get one new tram in Paris.

I've just discovered your site while preparing for a visit to Lisbon in June -- can't wait to check out the trams.

I think the way things are going we will be seeing a lot more trams in the future, hopefully with as bright red as this one :-)

Oh these trams are so beautiful. There was a time long ago when we had a tram car system in Jamaica. It has long since been destroyed/removed.

We do not have a very good public transportation system now and I often wish they would bring back the trains and the trams. It would really ease traffic congestion so much in the country and cut traveling times significantly.

Very nice picture...the tram is quite red!!!!

This is very much the same tram we have, but the older ones. But this is a single 'vehicle' only right? I coincidentally took some photos yesterday too! Great choice!

Ah, horizontal trams, interesting. I've only been on vertical ones. How are your studies going? Don't you like Mexico City, Mexico's photos. It was my first time visiting his blog too. When I say his photos, I instantly thought of you. Incredible talent!!!:)

Thank you for all the comments, never had so many.
R & r these are tourist trams but today's post is about the regular ones, but both are a good way to see the city.
Deslilas: I will fill the gap about Fernando Pessoa! Thanks.
Greg: see the yellow ones.
Gwyn: the vertical is in my opinion much more beautiful, but only had time to take these. I love the mexico blog but I think that his talent does not compare to mine, I am just an amateur who takes pictures a month ago!

Happy belated theme day. Light rail is the goal of many communities today and it is good to see Lisbon leading the way.
