May 2010 theme day: Statues

Marquês de Pombal Statue by night

Big party at round the statue yesterday night, I could hear the fireworks and see the sky all red from my window. On May 9th, Benfica became the Champion of the 2009-2010 Season against Rio Ave winning with two goals from Cardozo, which made him the top scorer of the season. After the end of the championship, Benfica was 5 points ahead the runner-up, SC Braga (the best place that Braga had in the history of the club), and had 76 points out of 90, with 24 victories, 4 draws and 2 defeats, with 78 goals scored and 20 suffered, and has a direct entry on the next years' UEFA Champions League. I'm sure that many didn't slep tonight.

João Quaresma was on the party and kindly sent me these photos. Thank you João...e parabens :)

Marquês de Pombal Statue by day

Today I went for a shooting at downtown by bus. When we are passing Marquês de Pombal Statue the was some guys plowing land, wich looked to me natural once the Pope is coming to town tomorrow and there are people working everywere putting the city pretty.

But the old lady next to me said: "Look what those punks did tonight at Benfica party, they destroyed all the roses, now the Pope wont see any roses!"

I pulled my camera out and shoot what I could. I told the lady: Don't worry, Im sure they manage to put the roses back there till tomorrow". They are magicians here when they want to.

At downtown after a shooting I flowed the crowd noise and figured out that what looked like another Benfica party was about to begin, so I shot 2 videos. One trying to get in, and the other trying to get out of there :)

Ha!  And I spoted this for the gentleman :)

Cidade Museum

The Cidade Museum (City Museum) is situated in the lovely Pimenta Palace, in Campo Grande, on the northern side of the Portuguese capital: Lisboa. This Museum presents a rich collection, along with the also very rich history of Lisboa, comprising collections of archaeology, painting, drawing, ceramics, among many others that testify the town’s history since the remote pre-historical times up until the beginning of the 20th century. As the collection is installed in the beautiful Pimenta Palace, the visit includes the interior and the gardens of the palace. Some of the collection’s highlights are the Maquette of Lisboa city in 1750, five years before the big earthquake and tsunami of 1755 that destroyed the majority of the town; the documents of the construction time of the majestic Águas Livres aqueduct; or the piano where Alfredo Keil wrote the “Portuguesa”, the National hymn, among many other historical pieces. #329 - Theme day topic: Circles/Spheres

Theme day topic: Circles/Spheres “Castle of the Eye”, Niizuma

Sculpture Garden, Jardim Monteiro Mor, Lisboa, Portugal

"Inaugurated in 1995 to house sculptures signed by contemporary artists both national and international, the Sculpture Garden was the manner in which the National Costume Museum found to enrich the landscape patrimony that is today the Monteiro-Mor Park.
Having the benefit of a natural environment and a diversified landscape, each sculpture is implanted according to its author’s criteria, avoiding in this manner the constraints that so often occur in exhibitions held in traditional spaces.

It is in this context that the sculptures by Catarina Baleiras and Niizuma come to feature in the garden; two artists who, together, represent the moment of creation. West and East reunited in one space, strengthening the age-old relationship between these two peoples. Thus, the Portuguese sculptor Catarina Baleiras expresses herself through her “Ladies of Strong Character Cultivate Wild Herbs”, a work that guided by the idea of an amalgam that resembles, by its form and not by the matter it is made of, a ball of yarn made of wool, linen, cotton or silk. The Japanese artist, on the other hand, evokes, through his sculpture “Castle of the Eye”, a verticality conquered by Homo Erectus. It is with this work that Niizuma also wishes to convey, in abstract form, his age-old Samurai origin.

The Sculpture Garden is also dedicated to Santo Antonio and to the 23 Franciscan friars who were crucified in the city of Nagasaki in 1597, best known as the “Martyrs of Japan”

During the course of this year, on the occasion of the Silver Anniversary of the National Costume Museum and the Monteiro-Mor Park, two more sculptures will be implanted in the park: Soror Mariana (Sister Mariana) by João Cutileiro and A Mola (The Spring) by José Lucas." [*]

#306 - November 2008 Theme Day: Books

Livraria Bizantina

The Bookstore Byzantine account many years of experience working with old and rare books, manuscripts and other historical documents, and is able to find the titles that demand and that persist in failing to reach by hand.

They have two stores in Lisbon, one in Chiado, and another later located at Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, with the premises of the Palace of Independence.

I chose this old bookstore because it is located in my favorite street of downtown.

#214 - Elevador de Santa Justa, August 2008 Theme Day: Metal

214 elevador 1

Santa Justa Lift

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Santa Justa Lift (Elevador de Santa Justa), also called Carmo Lift (Elevador doCarmo), is a lift in the city of Lisbon at Santa Justa Street. It connects downtown streets with the uphill Carmo Square.

The Santa Justa Lift was designed by Raul Mesnier de Ponsard, an engineer born in Oporto to French parents, and apprentice of Gustave Eiffel. Construction began in 1900 and was finished in 1902; originally powered by steam, it was converted to electrical operation in 1907.

The iron lift is 45 metres tall and is decorated in neogothic style, with a different pattern on each storey. The top storey is reached by helicoidal staircases and has a terrace that offers views of Lisbon Castle, the Rossio Square and the Baixa neighbourhood. There are two elevator booths. Each has wooden interior and accommodates 24 people.

The lift has become a tourist attraction in Lisbon as, among the urban lifts in Lisbon, Santa Justa is the only vertical one. Others, including Elevador da Glória and Elevador da Lavra, are more like funiculars that help climb the slopes of Lisbon.

#183 - July 2008 Theme Day: "No . . ." signs

NoCoyotes

Coyotes in Lisbon?

This sign is at some lousy bushes between sidewalks. Was put there by the parish to prevent the owners of bring there their dogs. I do not understand the objective when there is no maintenance and the bushes are full of garbage.

This sign was adjusted by George Townboy since I could not find any with the word NO.
