Marquês de Pombal Statue by night

Big party at round the statue yesterday night, I could hear the fireworks and see the sky all red from my window. On May 9th, Benfica became the Champion of the 2009-2010 Season against Rio Ave winning with two goals from Cardozo, which made him the top scorer of the season. After the end of the championship, Benfica was 5 points ahead the runner-up, SC Braga (the best place that Braga had in the history of the club), and had 76 points out of 90, with 24 victories, 4 draws and 2 defeats, with 78 goals scored and 20 suffered, and has a direct entry on the next years' UEFA Champions League. I'm sure that many didn't slep tonight.

Marquês de Pombal Statue by day

Today I went for a shooting at downtown by bus. When we are passing Marquês de Pombal Statue the was some guys plowing land, wich looked to me natural once the Pope is coming to town tomorrow and there are people working everywere putting the city pretty.

But the old lady next to me said: "Look what those punks did tonight at Benfica party, they destroyed all the roses, now the Pope wont see any roses!"

I pulled my camera out and shoot what I could. I told the lady: Don't worry, Im sure they manage to put the roses back there till tomorrow". They are magicians here when they want to.

At downtown after a shooting I flowed the crowd noise and figured out that what looked like another Benfica party was about to begin, so I shot 2 videos. One trying to get in, and the other trying to get out of there :)

Ha! And I spoted this for the gentleman :)

Igreja do Carmo

This amazing gothic monument, or what's left of it, was founded by Nuno Álvares Pereira, the commander that became a member of the Carmelite Order. Its construction was finished in 1423 and was at that time the biggest church in Lisbon.

The ruins of the Carmo Church, left by the devastating earthquake in 1755, are best seen from the Baixa (downtown) especially from Rossio, from Graça or from St. George Castle. They represent centuries of history and is home to the Archaeological Carmo Museum.

In this museum there is a historical collection of inestimable value with pieces from prehistory to contemporaneity. So, make sure you go beyond the external wealth of these ruins and take a look inside for an enriching insight into the past! [*]

"Rossio is one of the most beautiful squares in Lisbon. People pass here everyday, rushing for work, and hardly take the time to look around. It's not only the beautiful monuments and the fountains, or its fascinating history... Rossio is a living book.

Recently renovated, it hasn't lost any of its mysticism... Feel it around the D. Maria II National Theatre, where many plays were, and are, performed and seen by Kings and Queens, around the fountains used at the beginning of October to baptize the freshmen as they were about to enter the University -, around the cafes frequented by famous Portuguese personalities - like Cafe Nicola founded in 1929 - and yes, oh yes, smell it on freshly roasted chestnuts that have been sold in the Rossio Square for many many years.

In the middle of the square there's a statue of Dom Pedro IV and at its foot the four female figures representing Justice, Wisdom, Strength and Moderation, qualities attributed to Dom Pedro himself.
The originally called 'Dom Pedro IV Square', got the name Rossio from the local people and it's still today a traditional meeting point both for Lisboetas and visitors." [*]

Lisbon's City Hall

West of Comercio Square, following Rua do Arsenal, is Praça do Municipio (Municipal Square), a small peaceful square where the City Hall, Appeals Court and Navy Arsenal stand.

The City Hall building is a neoclassical palace with an elegant exterior featuring sculptures on the triangular tympanum supported by four paired columns. The interior, which can only be visited on free guided tours on Sunday mornings, is rich in works of art, including a painting showing Marquês de Pombal during the times of the reconstruction of Lisbon.

Outside the building is an interesting pillory with a spiral column built of a single block in the 18th century, and crowned with a gilt metal sphere.

A large busy central square

This large square commemorates the country's liberation from 60 years of Spanish rule in 1640.

In the center is a patterned pavement surrounding a 30-meter high obelisk with two bronze figures on the pedestal depicting Victory and Freedom.

On the west side is Foz Palace, the former residence of the Marquis of Foz, now housing a national tourism office.

Built from the mid-18th to the mid-19th centuries, the palace may only be visited with special permission. The interior and its furniture were inspired by Paris' Versailles Palace and the most interesting rooms are the Renaissance-style Stove Room, the Mirror Room, and the atrium of the chapel of Our Lady of Purity.

Next to the palace is a building known as Eden Cinema, now serving as an aparthotel (which may be booked here). Built in 1929 it is considered an art deco marvel, with its lavish interior having masqueraded as a Russian hotel in the Wim Wenders film "Until the End of the World."

A few steps away is the much photographed Elevador da Gloria, a funicular that links downtown to the Bairro Alto district.

Another popular attraction in this square is Lisbon's "Hard Rock Cafe", which is always a popular attraction for homesick tourists or memorabilia collectors of the world-famous music-themed restaurant. [*]

A monument to Lisbon's rebirth

Like the Champs-Elysees and other great European boulevards, Lisbon's Avenida da Liberdade ends at a large roundabout and a monument. This is the monument to the Marquis of Pombal, the prime minister responsible for the rebuilding of Lisbon following the Great Earthquake in 1755, showing him standing on a column with his hand on a lion (symbol of power) and his eyes directed to the downtown area that he rebuilt. The base is decorated with allegorical images depicting Pombal's political, educational, and agricultural reforms. Broken blocks of stone at the foot of the monument and tidal waves flooding the city symbolize the effects of the earthquake. The surrounding paving stones are decorated with a mosaic of Lisbon's coat of arms.

Maternidade Alfredo da Costa, the biggest parenting in Lisbon

The Parenting Alfredo da Costa is located in the parish of São Sebastião da Pedreira. It was built on the foundations of a temple, with the project architect Miguel Ventura Terra.
The first maternity in Lisbon to be designed and built from scratch was inaugurated on December 5, 1932. He was its founder and first director Professor Augusto de Almeida Monjardino. It appears that the work of special protection and defence of pregnant women have taken beginning in 1755, after the earthquake that destroyed more than half of the city of Lisbon. One of the buildings destroyed, not only by the earthquake but also by the subsequent fire, was the All Saints Hospital, whose patients had to be transferred to the College of St. Anthony. This building was once outside the main house of Jesuits and was seized with all other property.

"The Mosque of Lisbon was built on the street to the Mosque, (Blue Neighborhood), near the Plaza of Spain.

It is kind of prayer room with oriental wide, dominated by a dome, and with Minarete ramp outside. It was built between 1979 and 1985 with the help of a large group of Islamic countries, the commitment of the Islamic community of Lisbon and the City of Lisbon which ceded the land. It also aims religious and social support to Muslims living, temporarily or permanently the area of the city. The mosque is for believers place of prayer and meditation individual and collective space and a much appreciated rest, peaceful coexistence and sharing society.

The Iberian Peninsula was Muslim territory since the seventh century until at least the sixth century, but in the south Islam remained longer, in some places by the end of the fifteenth century. Luxbuna, Lisbon Muslim, was conquered by Christians in 1147, but the community of believers was organized in Lisbon to the Moorish quarter of the sixteenth century around its two mosques and "Madrassa".

The influence of civilization and art in the Muslim way of being and living in Portugal and Spain was very deep and in many ways still remains. Islam currently has more than 950 million believers throughout the world, particularly in Asia (650 million) and Africa (270 million). "

The Cidade Museum (City Museum) is situated in the lovely Pimenta Palace, in Campo Grande, on the northern side of the Portuguese capital: Lisboa. This Museum presents a rich collection, along with the also very rich history of Lisboa, comprising collections of archaeology, painting, drawing, ceramics, among many others that testify the town’s history since the remote pre-historical times up until the beginning of the 20th century. As the collection is installed in the beautiful Pimenta Palace, the visit includes the interior and the gardens of the palace. Some of the collection’s highlights are the Maquette of Lisboa city in 1750, five years before the big earthquake and tsunami of 1755 that destroyed the majority of the town; the documents of the construction time of the majestic Águas Livres aqueduct; or the piano where Alfredo Keil wrote the “Portuguesa”, the National hymn, among many other historical pieces. Some of you had already read this information when I put the first post of this historic coffee, more than a year ago, year so maybe you only want to review some of the photos witch I personally prefer to these. Sorry for the inconvenience :)

MB: I've puted some information about the convent three posts ago.

The Café Nicola is par excellence of the more literary cafes of the capital. Founded in 1787, by an Italian named Nicola, this was the coffee elected by Bocage, which eventually became the symbol of the brand of coffee Nicola. In 1837, led to a bookstore and only in 1929, returned to serve coffee, continuing connected to artists and intellectuals such as Malhoa, Pato Monis, among others. Its new owners, the family Albuquerque, decide to make a difference by creating your own coffee. Today, mainly frequented by tourists, is off the scene of releases of books and tertúlias. Recently refurbished, the restaurant located in the basement, whose decoration was in charge of Graça Viterbo, maintains original furniture from 1935 and offers a refined service lunch and dinner. Since there is much that the Café Nicola is a symbol of Rossio and low Pombaline as the Tertúlias of Lisbon, attended by artists, politicians and other figures of Portuguese culture. Today, refurbished continues to delight with the same spirit and charm of other times. For its location is considered a tourist attraction, not only for their beauty and historical seniority as well, its gastronomic specialities, including the "Bife to Nicola" and "Bife the Café," and "Cod to Lisbonense." At thursdays good jazz and classical music over the already known and authoritative "Encounters Nicola." [*]

"Convento de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Arroios (Hospital de Arroios)
Location
Rua Quirino da Fonseca, Praça do Chile, Avenida Almirante Reis
Parish: St. George of Arroios

Built in 1705 from the financing of D. atarina of Braganza, daughter of D. João IV and Luísa de Gusmão, worked until 1755 in the conventual space training college of the Jesuits, taking the name of St. George's College of Arroios.
Resisted the earthquake of 1755 but not the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1759, when Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the future Marquis of Pombal (1769) determined the occupation of the convent for Franciscan nuns, leaving the space to be known as the convent Our Lady of Conception of Arroios.

The convent was unoccupied in 1890, the year when the last nun died in 1892, the State decided that the space was converted into a hospital and was determinated that operate as a hospital for isolation for patients with bubonic plague, cholera, smallpox, leprosy and tuberculosis.

From 1898, the former monastery took the name of Queen Dona Amélia Hospital and it is only the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis, for deployment in 1911 after moving to the Republic Hospital of call streams. It worked until 1993, when it was permanently disabled and is currently unoccupied.

In the church of the monastery remained the remains of the Marquis of Pombal before being transported to the Church of Our Lady of Mercy.
The church remains open to cult and frequented mainly by Ukrainian community resident in Lisbon.

Main façade of Lisbon's bull ring.The Campo Pequeno bullring (Portuguese: Praça de Touros do Campo Pequeno) is the bull ring of Lisbon, Portugal. It is located in the Campo Pequeno Square, by the Avenida da República. After a profound renovation, it re-opened as a multi-event venue in 2006, designed to be used for various events apart from bull fighting. It hosts a range of live acts and has seen many famous bands perform there. It includes an underground shopping centre, restaurants and a parking lot.

History
Lisbon's bullring was built between 1890 and 1892 under the project of Portuguese architect António José Dias da Silva. His design was inspired by the bullring of Madrid, by Emilio Rodriguez Ayuso, later demolished. The style is the neo-Mudéjar, a Romantic style inspired by the old Arab architecture from Iberia. Lisbon's new bull ring replaced an old one, located in the Campo de Santana.

Inside
Inside any bullring like this one in Lisbon, bulls, calves and cows are repeatedly stabbed with "bandeirilhas" by a man on a horse. While blood runs out of the bull's body, it still has to suffer more pain coming from other men that don't need a horse in order to protect themselves because the bull is already too weak to hurt them. (The bull is later killed for it's meat in a slaughterhouse, or dies from infected wounds wating to be killed, or its wounds are "treated" with salt and the bull is later sent to a bullring in order to be tortured again.)

The building
The bull ring has a circular floorplan with four large octagonal towers on each cardinal point with oriental-looking domes. The Western tower is flanked by two turrets and serves as main entrance. The many windows of the building have a typical horseshoe shape. The entire surface of the building is covered by bricks of orange colour. The inner arena has 80 metres of diameter and is covered with sand. The seats hold almost 10,000 people.

"The station opened to the public in 1959 when the inauguration of the network. The Portuguese School of the Equestrian Art is the natural sequence of what the Portuguese Royal Academy, extin-guished in the last century. Even so, that horsemanship and tradition survived and they had a great influence on the way of riding in Portugal.

On the other hand, and due to the continued practice of bullfighting on horseback, the samekind of horse, the same horsemanship, harness and costumes used in the XVIII century have been kept up till nowadays. All this represents a unique cultural equestrian patrimony in the world.

The purpose of this School is not only to keep and divulge this patrimony, but also to the practice and teaching of the Art of riding, which has such a brilliant tradition in Portugal.

The stallions used by the School (EPAE) are Lusitanian horses from the ancient Royal Stud at Alter, founded by King João V in 1748. [*]

The church, preceded by double staircase, has a facade flanked by two bell towers and is unmitigated by a double triangular pediment. Inside, a ship, there are a profusion of carvings and paintings that decorate the walls.

The Zon Christmas tree shines at the top of the Parque Eduardo VII, Lisbon. It is the largest Christmas tree in Europe and where it is illuminated, can be seen from several points of Lisbon.

In all, the tree took 1 625 000 microlâmpadas and almost 13 kilometers of hose light, as well as 1 500 bulbs' ball 'and 90 neon stars.

The biggest Christmas tree in Europe is to return to Lisbon after the last year have been built in Porto, and can be seen until January 06.
